Presence/Presença is an independent writers’ collective. Named by Frank X. Gaspar, the group formed in June 2011 at the DISQUIET International Literary Program in Lisbon, Portugal, in response to the relative absence of Luso-American/Luso-Canadian voices in contemporary letters. Presence/Presença provides a community for North American writers of the Portuguese and Lusophone diaspora. This diaspora includes those with roots in Lusophone countries such as Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, East Timor, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, the Chinese Special Administrative Region of Macau, and Galicia, as well other regions where Portuguese have migrated.
Meet and chat with nearly 200 of our members in our extremely active Facebook group established in 2011: https://www.facebook.com/groups/PresencePresenca/. We especially love to meet young or emerging writers of Luso-American/Luso-Canadian descent and those who are rediscovering their roots. Inclusion: All Lusophone backgrounds are welcomed in the group, including Cape Verdean, Goan, Brazilian, and many more. Posts appear in English and Portuguese, but English is most prevalent.
Write to us directly at presencepresenca at gmail dot com. We’d love to hear your ideas for future activities and welcome submissions of news items relevant to the community.
Thanks to Portuguese-Canadian writer Cristina Ogden for her work on an earlier version of this site.
